In the event of a local chemical spill, biological threat, pandemic, dirty bomb or any other event that contaminates the air around
us, you may need to shelter-in-place. This will require a large enough supply of plastic sheeting and duct tape to seal off
all of your exterior doors and windows. At the very least, you should be able to seal off a smaller room that you can use as
your shelter-in-place room or as a smaller heated envelope during extreme cold weather. Plastic sheeting and duct tape can be
used for other purposes as well. You can use the plastic sheeting to make temporary repairs to your home, make an emergency
shelter or construct a makeshift greenhouse, to name a few and, as we all know, the uses for duct tape are far too numerous to list.
6 mil clear plastic sheeting is a good choice for disaster preparedness. Its thick enough to do the job and not too expensive.
You can buy it in rolls, and it doesn’t take up much storage space. Calculate how much you will need to seal your doors and
windows and add at least 20%. This is one item that will become very handy and valuable during a crisis situation. The
same goes for duct tape. You purchase a quality brand and have plenty on hand.
You should store your plastic sheeting and
duct tape in an area that is not susceptible to extreme cold or extreme heat. The glue on cheaper brands of duct tape can degrade
in extreme temperatures.
