General preparedness refers to your overall state of preparedness and readiness. Every situation, emergency and/or disaster
requires a certain amount of preparedness. For example, in the case of a hurricane, you may need to think about things like
knowing your evacuation routes or having enough supplies to survive until help arrives. While in an active shooter situation
you won’t need a three days supply of food, but you will have had to prepare yourself by practicing situational awareness, learning
first aid or understanding how you may react to a violent situation. Your preparation efforts for specific types of disasters will
overlap to a large degree, i.e. evacuation plans, food storage, fuel storage, and having a generator will be common preparations for
things like hurricanes, storms, power outages, etc. Ideally, we would like to be as prepared as possible for any contingency.
Your
state of “General Preparedness” will depend on several things, such as, your commitment to prepare, how long you have been preparing
and your preparation budget. In the “Strategies” section, you will find more information on how to steadily improve you state
of readiness. Ideally, we would like to be as prepared as possible for any contingency, but we need to start somewhere, prioritize
and gradually move forward.
